The Shaul Garden
The garden sits on one of the four hills which surrounded the historical valley ("HaEmek"). It was called "J’bal Al Harmia" (Bandits’ Hill) due to the Arab raids on convoys and passersby. During the First World War, the British General Edward Bulfin positioned his canons on it, and battled against the Turks who had entrenched themselves north of the Yarkon. At the time, it was nicknamed "Bulfin’s Hill".
The garden was inaugurated in 1937, and was initially called "Presidents Garden", in memory of the presidents of the Zionist Organization. Upon the death of the poet Shaul Tchernichovsky in 1943, the garden was renamed "Shaul Garden" in his memory.
Eventually, an artificial lake, a fish pond and a petting zoo with monkey, parrots and fowl were also added. The petting zoo, which attracted many visitors, earned the garden the name "Monkeys’ Garden".
In 1974 the animals were transferred to the Ramat-Gan Safari park which opened its gates for the first time.
