Kofer HaYishuv (Community Ransom)
During the 1936-1939 Arab revolt in Mandatory Palestine, when the "Homa V’Migdal" communities were established, there arose a need to finance the outlay for protecting the Yishuv.
The Jewish National Council set up the "Kofer HaYishuv" Zionist enterprise, and sent out an appeal to the country’s inhabitants to contribute money, jewelry and other items.
The largest branch of the "Kofer HaYishuv", which had control over Gush Dan from Tel Aviv to Hadera, established in Ramat-Gan in 1938 (in a building which up to that point had served as the "Hebrew Gymnasium"). The huge "Kofer HaYishuv" signboard on its façade lent its name to the square up until 1954, when it was given the official name "Independence Square."
