Michael Shapiro’s Yard
In this yard lived the Michael Shapiro family, the elder brother of the legendary guard, Abraham Shapiro.
The Shapira family immigrated to Jerusalem in the late 19th century and were among the founders of Petah Tikva.
The family home was built of kurkar stones with clay and straw filling. Animals were housed on the first floor and the attic served as a storage room. In part of this house the family lived. At the end of the yard you can see a remnant of one of the walls of the house. In the courtyard stands a building that was built in the early 20th century, in which there were, in addition to the family rooms, various shops. In the 1920s, a second floor building was added. On this floor was a "Saar Cinema", in which mainly action films were screened: war, crime, Native Americans and cowboys, to the delight of the residents of the colony.
At the beginning of the rise of the Yemenite Jews, many of them lived in the great courtyard. Later, new immigrants lived in the building. For a while there was the municipal library here.
