בסתיו תרנ"ט (אוקטובר 1898) לכבוד ביקורו בירושלים של הקיסר ורעיתו אוגוסטה ויקטוריה הוקמו לאורך דרך יפו ארבעה שערי כבוד הדורים, המערבי מבינהם הוקם על ידי קהילות יהודי ירושלים וקושט ברימונים ופעמונים, כתר וספר תורה שהובאו מבתי הכנסת הסמוכים, משני צידי השער ישבו רבני האשכנזים וכנגדם רבני הספרדים.

Bells and Pomegranates, Pomp and Glory - the Royal Visit of Wilhelm II
In the autumn (October) of 1898, in honor of the visit of the Kaiser and his wife, Augusta Victoria, four ornate gateways were built along the Jaffa Road. The westermmost gate was put up by the Jewish communities of Jerusalem and decorated with pomegranates, bells, a crown and torah scroll brought from the local synagogues. The Ashkenazi and Sephardic rabbis sat on either side of the gateway.
