Burial Caves

מערות קבורה אלו נחשפו עם הקמת הגן הבוטני ומתוארכות לימי בית שני. מערות כאלה היו בבעלות משפחות עשירות ובני המשפחה נקברו בהן יחד.

הגומחות הכילו גופות, עד לאיסוף העצמות כעבור 11 חודשים. הבורות הקטנים במרכז אפשרו לאנשים לעמוד. בזמן שהם מסדרים את עצמות המתים.

גלוסקמאות הן תיבות קבורה קטנות בהן השתמשו יהודים לשמירת עצמות, החל בשנים 20-15 לפנה"ס ועד למאה השנייה לספירה.
ראשיתו של מנהג קבורה זה בירושלים.

הבור הגדול במערה השמאלית יוצא דופן בגודלו, וייתכן ששימש לטקסי פולחן של טיהור המת.

צמחים שימשו לעיתים קרובות לעיטור גלוסקמאות.
גפן, תאנה, תמר, שושן צחור, קיסוס ורימון - כולם היו השראה לעיטורי הגלוסקמאות.

המוטיב הנפוץ ביותר היה רוזטה : שושנה בעלת שישה עלי כותרת, שלעיתים השתלבו עם עלי קיסוס.
