Callitris verrucosa

Rough Pine (Scrub Pine, Cypress Pine)
Callitris verrucosa

Natural range: Australia

In spite of its common name, this is not a pine (no long pine-like needles), nor a cypress, though a member of the cypress family. Growing well in arid regions, it is widely planted in Israel. It often invades wild habitats.

[a question]
The scientific name Callitris means "three scales," and verrucosa (as in varicose veins) means "warty." Why these two names? (Hint: Look at the tree’s cones).

[The Answer to the question]
This tree’s cones have two unusual features:
1) Look at a cone end-on (that is, with the stem furthest away from you) and see its pattern of three large and three small scales in alternation.
2) See also its characteristic bumpy ("warty") surface.
