Jose Rizal, who was an ophthalmologist by profession, was active in a movement that advocated reforms for the Philippines that were under Spanish rule. Rizal was executed in 1896 by the Spanish authorities as a suspect in a revolt after the Philippine Revolution (the revolt of the Filipino people under Spanish rule). Rizal lived for a short time in London.
The sign was placed in 1983 and replaced an earlier sign on behalf of the Philippine Society.
