Comments:
The statue is dedicated to the English politician Richard Cobden who was active for free trade and peace. Cobden was known for his opposition to the "Corn Law", laws that imposed high tariffs on wheat imports to Britain. Cobden was in contact with Napoleon III with the aim of promoting trade ties between France and Britain.

The statue was placed 3 years after his death (1868) on the basis of which the name of Napoleon III is mentioned as the main donor. The sculpture was made by W. and T. Wills (Wills Brothers)
