This plaque was unveiled in memory of
LAWRENCE SHERIFF
FOUNDER OF RUGBY SCHOOLIN 1567
and thus of Lawrence Sheriff School whose bequest of eight acres of pasture now known as
THE RUGBY ESTATE
continues to reflect the spirit of his charitable endowment

The board is dedicated to a merchant who was known as the "grocer to Queen Elizabeth I" and in his will arranged for the establishment of the Rugby School, in the town of Rugby, a school where the game of rugby was born. The sign is located in the "Rugby Estate" area of London belonging to the Rugby School, and was bought in the 16th century by Lawrence Sheriff.

The sign is an initiative of historian A. N. Wilson, a graduate of the Rugby School, and was placed in 2017 as part of the school’s 450th anniversary celebrations.
