The statue shows the first Duke of Terceira, who was a marshal in the Spanish Civil War, and after the war also served 4 times as Prime Minister of Portugal.

The statue was placed in 1877 on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the liberation of Lisbon by the Duke, and was made by José Simões de Almeida (uncle) and António Gaspar
