The monument was erected in memory of the Jews who were murdered in the Lisbon Pogrom (Easter Massacre), in 1506, when thousands of Jews who lived secretly as Anusim (a forced transgression), were persecuted and murdered. The text on the monument appears against the background of the Star of David.

The monument was erected in 2006 to mark the 500th anniversary of the pogrom.

On the base of the monument appears a verse from the book of Job:
אֶרֶץ, אַל-תְּכַסִּי דָמִי וְאַל-יְהִי מָקוֹם, לְזַעֲקָתִי. איוב ט"ז, י"ח
ó terra, não cubras o meu sangue, e não haja lugar em que seja abafado o meu clamor! (Job 16:18)
