Stanley Medicks and the Machal Memorial
The creation of this Machal memorial was the dream of Stanley Medicks, a Machalnik from Kenya, Chairman of UK, Europe and Scandinavian Machal, who passed away, aged 87, on 19th June 2013. He believed this beautiful Memorial was the ideal place to read the roll of honour every Yom Hazicharon and salute the 123 men and women, Jews and non-Jews, who paid the supreme sacrifice. He chose this site for its importance to the "Burma Road", built by hand at night to enable a besieged Jerusalem to receive vital supplies. Stanley was a platoon commander in the 7th Brigade, which was involved in the liberation of the Galilee in 1948.

הקמת אנדרטת המח"ל בשער הגיא הייתה חלומו ויוזמתו של סטנלי מדיקס, מתודב מקניה ויו"ר המח"ל בבריטניה, אירופה וסקנדינביה. סטנלי הלך לעולמו ב -10 ביוני 2013 והוא בן 87. הוא סבר שאנדרטה זו תשמש אתר הולם בו יקראו מדי יום הזיכרון שמותיהם של 123 נשים וגברים, יהודים לא יהודים של מתנדבי המח"ל אשר נפלו מות גיבורים בקרב. סטנלי בחר באתר הזה בשל חשיבותו ומיקומו ב"דרך בורמה" שהוכשרה בלילות, בידיים חשופות, כדי לאפשר הובלת הספקה חיונית ומזון לירושלים הנצורה. סטנלי פיקד על מחלקה בחטיבה 7 שהשתתפה בקרבות לשחרור הגליל בשנת 1948.
