Monument Commemorating the IZL Members who Fell during the Battles over Ramla n 1948
At the onset of the War of Independence Ramla was an Arab city with a population of 18,000 residents. The main route from Tel Aviv and from Jaffa to Jerusalem passed through Ramla, which was blocked to the Jewish transportation. As part of the activities launched to take control of the Jerusalem route, the IZL (Irgun Zvai Le’umi, meaning National Military Organization, underground movement) members attacked Ramla.

The attacking forces included nine companies under the command of Amichai Paglin (known as Gidi). the IZL commander of operations. They faced forces whose size was equal to theirs and included combatants from Arabic Ramla and a company of the Jordanian army (The Arab Legion).
The first attack was initiated on May 16, 1948. IZL forces left Beer Yaakov in two divisions, one headed towards the center of the city and the other towards the building located one kilometer south of this monument.
This building served as an Officer’s School for the British and then as headquarters for the commander of the Palestinian forces in the region, Hassan Salame.
As a result of the counterattack of the Arabs, the forces attacking the city were blocked and forced to retreat while suffering many losses. One of the commanders relayed. "After few hours of cautiously advancing, while attempting to maintain the advantage of surprise, we approached the Legion’s posts. At a distance of several meters from the post, due to barking dogs, we were spotted by the enemy who opened fire. Retreating was very difficult, and during the initial retreat I had to stop the platoon to assure no one was missing".
The following four weeks IZI combatants attacked Ramla three more times, but each time they were warded off. On the 11th of June 1948, the date of ceasefire according to the first declaration of truce during the war, the Arabs attacked the school building and seized it from IZL combatants. 51 IZL fighters lost their lives during the attacks on the Ramla front. Some of the fallen were declared missing during the fervor of the battles, and only four years later an operation was launched to locate their bodies and bring them to burial.

Ramia finally surrendered in July of 1948, after the IDF seized nearby Lod during the "Danny" Operation.

The monument in front of you was designed by Oscar and Avi Fisher. It is shaped in the form of a three-dimensional Magen David with walls of different heights on both sides, creating a complex facing Jerusalem.

On Thursday, May 14, 1948, the establishment of the State of Israel was announced. The next day, Arab armies invaded it.

The IDF was then in the process of being established, and the "Hagana" Irgun and Lehi underground were still operating in Israel.

During the fighting, the Haganah’s representatives turned to the Irgun headquarters and asked them to attack the Arab forces in Ramla, thereby diverting them from the battle zones.
About eight hundred Irgun soldiers took part in the campaign, which lasted from May 6 to June 11. During which 51 Irgun fighters fell.
The fighting on the fronts of Ramla and Latrun helped break through and lift the siege on Jerusalem.
