מתחם חוות שלם מהווה ציון דרך חשוב על ציר הזמן של ימי ראשית המדינה. החווה הוקמה בשנת 1953 על ידי האגודה החקלאית השיתופית "הזרע", שעסקה בגידול, פיתוח והפקת זרעים לחקלאות. הרקע להקמת החווה היה החרם הכלכלי על המשק היהודי בארץ והצורך ההולך וגובר בתוצרת חקלאית לאוכלוסייה הגדלה של הישוב.
פעילות האגודה בתחום המחקר והפיתוח החקלאי, תרמה להפיכת מדינת ישראל למובילה ופורצת דרך בעולם בכל הקשור לחקלאות מודרנית וטיפוח זנים מיוחדים.
מיקום החווה בשטחים הפתוחים הסובבים את נחל איילון העניקו למקום אופי ייחודי. הנוף המישורי חקלאי היה זרוע בעצי נוי ופרי, והחיבור של החווה לסביבתה יצר המשך טבעי בין מבני החווה לשדות המקיפים אותם. החווה חולקה לשני מתחמים עיקריים - המתחם המשקי בו התקיימה הפעילות החקלאית ומתחם המגורים בו התגוררו עובדי החווה ומשפחותיהם.

تشكل منطقة مزرعة شاليم معلماً هاماً على محور الزمن لفترة بداية الدولة ، أقيمت مزرعة شاليم عام 1953 من قبل الجمعية التعاونية الزراعية " البذرة " ، والتي عملت على تنمية وتطوير البذور للزراعة . كانت الخلفية لإقامة المزرعة هي المقاطعة الاقتصادية التي أعلن عنها ضد المرافق الاقتصادية اليهودية في البلاد والحاجة المتزايدة لتزويد المجتمع الذي يكبر عددياً في البلدة بالمنتجات الزراعية التي يحتاجها . ساهم نشاط الجمعية في مجال البحث والتطوير الزراعي في جعل دولة إسرائيل رائدة وطلائعية في العالم بكل ما يتعلق بالزراعة العصرية وتنمية الأنواع الفريدة .
موقع المزرعة في المناطق المفتوحة المحيطة بوادي أيالون - المصرارة منح المكان طابعاً مميزاً ، المشهد الزراعي المستوي كان مزروعاً بأشجار طبيعية وأشجار الفاكهة ، والتواصل بين المزرعة ومحيطها خلق استمرارية طبيعية بين مباني المزرعة وبين الحقول المحيطة بها ، قسمت المزرعة إلى منطقتين أساسيتين : منطقة مرافق المزرعة التي يجرى فيها النشاط الزراعي ، ومنطقة السكن التي يسكنها العاملون في المزرعة وعائلاتهم .

The Shalem Farm complex is an important milestone in the timeline of the early days of the State of Israel. Shalem Farm was established in 1953 by the "Hazerah" Communal Agricultural Association, who were involved in growing and cultivating seeds for farming. The background to the farm’s establishment was the economic boycott declared on the country’s Jewish economy, and the increasing need for the supply of agricultural products for the growing population of the village.
The activities of the Association in the field of agricultural research and development contributed to the shaping of the State of Israel as a leader and trailblazer in the world in terms of modern agriculture and the cultivation of unique varieties. The location of the farm, in the open plains surrounding the Ayalon River gives the place a unique character. The flat agricultural landscape was planted with decorative and fruit trees, and the connection of the farm to its surroundings created a natural continuation between the farm buildings and the fields surrounding them. The farm is split into two main areas: the economic area, where agricultural activities took place; and the residential area, where the farm workers and their families lived.
