Ramat Gan Municipality Emblem
Nili Underground Key members of the underground The organization was headed by the agronomist, a native of the Zichron Yaakov colony - Aharon Aaronson. He was joined by his brothers Alexander and Sarah.
The Aaronson family led the Nili organization and became a symbol of Jewish resistance to Turkish rule in Israel.
Goals of the organization 1. The main goal: was to assist the British in conquering the country from the Turks by collecting intelligence on the Ottoman army in Palestine.
There was great fear of the continuation of the Turkish occupation in light of the cruelty it demonstrated in its treatment of the Armenians, as well as the understanding that Germany, an ally of the Ottoman Empire, was also dangerous to the free life of the Jews in the world.
"...Everyone who values freedom must now risk his life in the war against the Germans. For if, God forbid, we allow them to emerge victorious, there will not be a single corner of the world left where we can live a life worthy of their name"...
(Aaron Aharonson to Avshalom Feinberg and Alexander Aharonson, Zichron Yaakov, April 1915)
2. The members of the network believed that by their actions they were supporting the Jewish settlement in Israel, which suffered during the war the disgrace of hunger and disease.
3. By collecting information about the actions of the Turks against the Jewish settlement in Palestine, the members of Nili hoped to bring to the attention of the world what was happening in Israel.
4. The expulsion of the Turks from Palestine was seen as a way to realize the vision of establishing a Jewish state in Israel.
The name of the underground is taken from the book of Samuel 1, chapter 15, verse 29
"The eternal Israel will not lie"
