The M4A1 tank is one of many Sherman variants produced in the United States during World War II. Its gun has better armor penetration capability than had the short- barreled 75 mm gun of the original M4s and a larger turret. France supplied Israel with tanks of this type prior to the 1956 Sinai Campaign, in which these Shermans participated in the battle against the Egyptian Army, at the Rueifa Dam. Several years later, these tanks were upgraded to the M-51 model.
