India Gate commemorates the fallen of the Indian Army (British Indian Army, soldiers recruited in British-controlled India) in World War I and the Afghan Wars. The pillars of the gate, erected in 1931, are engraved with the names of 13,300 martyrs (out of approximately 70,000).
