The sign is on the house where Winfield Scott (1786-1866) lived, who was the commander of the United States Army during, among other things, the Mexican-American War, and was the military governor of Mexico City. He later ran for president of the United States but was unsuccessful. Winfield lived in this house from 1853 to 1855.
Today the building is used by the Department of Italian Studies at New York University
