Moshav Neta’im
Founded in 1932 Moshav Netaim
Milestones in the history of the moshav since 1932
Moshav Neta’im was established in 1932, by a group of people from the second aliyah who came to the land, as part of the settlement of the thousand, a settlement plan of the Jewish Agency to settle a thousand working families near old colonies
Initially, they established 42 agricultural estates based on 15 dunams. A period of ’gradual settlement’ begins, in which the settlers continue to work in the colonies until their private property becomes their main source of income.
The founders, most of whom were Mapai members and had a strong cooperative consciousness, supported the principles of national land, self-employment, mutual guarantee and organized marketing.
The members of the moshav built the education system, school and kindergartens on their own and in collaboration with the Beit Hanan moshav. They established a consumer goods store and an office for the needs of the association, elected a secretariat, and held general meetings.
Veterans of the moshav say that the best of all were the shared holidays and the joint creation.
During World War II, eight of the moshav’s sons and daughters volunteered for the British army and fought in its ranks in World War II. One of them was killed on European soil.
Between 1945 and 1948, the security situation in the area deteriorated, and the moshav organized itself to defend itself against the many Arabs living in Nevi Rubin and the surrounding dunes. In 1947, three Jews were seriously injured in Netaim by Arabs.
At that time, Netaim members were forced to deal with the hostile presence of the British army and worked underground to protect the weapons and hide them in ’slicks’. The members were recruited to build a perimeter fence, dig positions, and distribute rations. The adult youth aged 17 to 25 were recruited into two standby classes and the young men served as ’contact runners’ and established Morse contacts with the surrounding settlements.
In 1948, with the outbreak of the War of Independence, all the locals were drafted into the army. Seven of them were killed and in memory of the fallen a sons’ garden was established with a stone in its center bearing their names.
A North African immigrant community was established near the moshav.
Due to the need for a livelihood, and at the insistence of the institutions, these people entered to work on the farms of the members in the 1990s, the decline of the moshav principles began. The purchasing organizations throughout the country went bankrupt, and in Netaim, as the rest of the moshav, agriculture dwindled, although today the moshav stands out for its organic agriculture, which has become a magnet for Israelis from all over the center.
In the 1990s, following the initiative of moshav member Eliyahu Alkalai, an agronomist by profession and director of the settlement department at the Jewish Agency, the moshav began the process of expanding and adding two sons’ housing units. Thanks to these sons’ housing units, the moshav continues to thrive and the number of households has increased from 48 landowners to 160 households in 2016
