A sign in the series of signs in Madrid, made of clay and depicting in an illustration one of the elements of the street

The street called Independence Street is named after the "Iberian War" (1808-1814) which was also called the "Peninsular War" and the Spanish War of Independence. A war between Napoleon’s France and Spain, Britain and Portugal for control of the Iberian Peninsula.
The street was renovated following the destruction by the French army in that war, and that is probably why it was named that way.
