A sign in the series of signs in Madrid, made of clay and depicting in an illustration one of the elements of the street
The street is named after Saint Agnes (Agnes of Rome), a Catholic saint who lived in the third century AD. After refusing to sacrifice to Roman idols, she was stripped of her clothes and placed in the city square. Anyone who approached her fell dead. She was later burned at the stake, but the fire did not touch her. Finally, the Roman governor beheaded her. She is considered the patron saint of virgins and gardeners. Her special symbol (which appears on the sign) is a lamb, since in Latin lamb = agnus. On the sign, she can be seen holding a palm branch in her hand, a symbol of the martyred saints.
The sign was painted by Alfredo Ruiz de Luna Gonzalez
