The statue, made by Mariano Benlliure and inaugurated in 1907, commemorates Arsenio Martínez Campos (1831-1900), who was a military man who participated in the military coup against the First Spanish Republic, which restored the monarchy (1874). He was later the General of Cuba, and participated in the wars in Africa, Mexico and Cuba. In 1879 he served for several months as Prime Minister of Spain.
