The sign on the church of Santo Antão, marks the revolution that was part of the struggle against the Spanish Empire. The revolution that was due to heavy taxes paid by Portugal in order to finance Spain’s war against England. The revolution began in this city - Evora, against the tax collectors. Since the revolutionary forces were not backed by military force, the revolution was suppressed
