Tablet fixed 1905 Premises rebuilt and tablet refixed 1937
The sign is located on the site of the former residence of engineer and railway builder Robert Stephenson (1803-1859). He was the son of engineer George Stephenson ("the father of the railway"). Robert has also been called "the greatest engineer of the 19th century" and is known for designing the "Rocket" locomotive (1829), one of the famous steam locomotives that served as the basis for future locomotives. (The first fatality in a train accident, killed by this locomotive, is commemorated on another sign Click for sign's details) Robert Stephenson was also a British Member of Parliament at various times.
The sign was erected in 1905, and as can be seen from the sign below the sign, after the house was demolished, the sign was reinstalled in 1937)
