Montera is the name of the hat worn by the bullfighter, but it is also worn by others. Legend has it that Sancho IV, King of Castile, got drunk before entering Madrid and dropped his hat here. Another version claims that the street name is a nickname for a man’s wife who was known for her beauty. The real origin is probably that this was the home of Juan Carlos and Francisco Lamontera.
In any case, the illustration on the sign shows a bullfighter’s hat and other elements of bullfighting.
