Avraham Stern "Yair" - Soldier and Poet
1907-1942 The poem "You are sacred to me, homeland" was written by Avraham Stern under his underground pseudonym "Yair", who founded the Lehi underground. "Yair" [believed that] Britain was the enemy and that a war should be waged against it until the British were removed and the Jewish people achieved sovereignty and independence in the Land of Israel.
In 1940, Yair resigned from the Irgun due to [a dispute over the methods of action] against the British, and together with a group of fighters [he founded the Lehi underground] Fighters for the Freedom of Israel, which launched the war [against the British occupier].
On February 12, 1942, the British discovered "Yairs" hiding place in southern Tel Aviv and murdered him [...]
"Yair" was murdered, but his spirit and will [and] political path [...] inspired his fighters who continued their war in the British Empire.
In August 1942, Yitzhak Shamir escaped from the British "Mizra" detention camp in order to reorganize the ranks.
Yitzhak Shamir, nicknamed "Michael," together with Natan Yellin Mor, nicknamed "Gera," and with Dr. Israel Scheib, nicknamed "Eldad," formed a leading center of Lehi in its determined and persistent war for the liberation of the homeland.
Towards the end of World War II in 1944, the Irgun also joined the war against the British, followed in 1945 by the Haganah and the Palmach - until the expulsion of the British in May 1948 and the establishment of the State of Israel. On the 2nd of Iyar, May 14, 1948.
At the outbreak of the War of Independence, Lehi members enlisted in the IDF and fought bravely until victory was achieved over the Arab armies.
128 Lehi fighters fell in the underground war, on the gallows of the foreign regime and in the ranks of the IDF.
The underground Lehi fighters arose and operated in the storm of the war and survived as a legend.
According to Yair Stern (the son)
You are sacred to me, homeland, according to the law of Moses and Israel.
Subjugated, scorned, prodigal, enslaved, I am your husband and redeemer.
And keep your mouths away from you, your devourers, in my life and in my death
I bow my head to you in the bosom of your mountains,
You will live forever in my blood.
And towards you, Queen, I fear your glory with my mouth
You are sacred to me, homeland, according to the law of Moses and Israel!
(Avraham Stern "Yair")
