From this place, the ship Speedwell set out, carrying pilgrims from Leiden who wanted to settle in the United States. The ship arrived at the port of Southampton, England, where the pilgrims boarded the "Mayflower" which carried the Pilgrim Fathers - the first European settlers in the United States.
