Water Supply to Jerusalem During the War of Independence Mekorot Plans the "Shiloach Plant"
The siege of Jerusalem tightened and the water shortage worsened. Contacts and efforts to resume the operation of the Latrun station, which was in Jordanian hands, were unsuccessful, and the search for alternative solutions continued.

During the first truce (June 1948), Mekorot proposed a brilliant solution that did not require the occupation of the Latrun area and the pumping station - laying a bypass water line from Hulda, along the newly breached Burma Road, to the Sha’ar Hagai station, which was in the hands of our forces. The provisional government approved the plan and tasked Mekorot with its implementation.
Explosion of the Latrun Station
In parallel with the secret operation of laying the line by ’Mekorot’ (the Shiloach Line), official negotiations continued with the Jordanians to resume the water supply from the Mandatory Line. On the night of August 11-12, 1948, when it almost seemed that the Latrun Station was about to be reactivated, the Jordanians blew up the station and finally eliminated the chances of reactivating the Mandatory Line.

Is Jerusalem doomed to dry up? Absolutely not.
"Water is already flowing through the Burma Pipeline to Jerusalem" David Ben-Gurion
On August 11, 1948, the day before the Latrun Station explosion and a few days before the city’s cisterns dried up, water was brought to Jerusalem and saved the residents Thirsty!
The delivery line provided the city with about 120 cubic meters per hour and enabled the city to withstand sieges and battles.
