The facade of the Prado Museum features 12 statues that represent virtues and qualities. These statues were commissioned by the museum from the sculptor Valeriano Salvatierra in 1830 to decorate the facade of the museum towards the completion of its construction (1831). Originally, 16 statues were commissioned, but 14 were finally made, between 1830 and 1836. Salvatierra, who died in 1836, was unable to finish all the statues, and others continued after him.
The current statue symbolizes "fertility" and features a figure holding a cornucopia filled with flowers, fruit, and wheat.
