הגן הבוטני הוקם בשנת 1973 על ידי פרופ’ יעקב גליל. הגן משתרע על פני 34 דונם, ומהווה מערכת אקולוגית טבעית למחצה, שבה מגוון עשיר של צמחים.

חלק עיקרי בגן הוא הגן האקולוגי, שבו תצוגה של צומח ארץ ישראל ושכנותיה. המוצג על פי בתי הגידול הטבעיים. בנוסף, בגן תצוגות של אוספי צמחים מרחבי העולם ומבנה ייחודי לתצוגה של שורשים.

הגן מהווה מוזיאון חי ודינמי של עולם הצומח על היבטיו השונים ואי ירוק של טבע במרחב העירוני הבנוי.

הגן משמ מרכז הוראה ומחקר רב-תחומי לסגל ולסטודנטים של אוניברסיטת תל אביב ומוסדות מחקר והשכלה גבוהה אחרים.
הגן עוסק גם בהקניית ידע בוטני ובחינוך לשמירת טבע לתלמידי בתי ספר ולקהל הרחב.

הגן הבוטני גם מתפקד כמרכז לשמירת טבע וכן מקלט לצמחים הנמצאים בסכנת הכחדה, במטרה לשמר את מגוון מיני הצמחים של ישראל וסביבותיה.

הגן שופץ וחודש בחלקו בשנת 2019 בזכות תרומתו הנדיבה של מר יהודה נפתלי.

פעילות הגן הבוטני נתמכת על ידי משרד החקלאות ופיתוח הכפר, באמצעות מועצת הגנים הבוטניים.

كما تُعنى الحديقة بنشر المعرفة النباتية وتثقيف طلاب المدارس وعامة الناس حول الحفاظ على الطبيعة.

تعمل الحديقة النباتية أيضًا كمركز لحماية الطبيعة وملجأً للنباتات المهددة بالانقراض، بهدف الحفاظ على تنوع الأنواع النباتية في إسرائيل ومحيطها.

تم تجديد الحديقة جزئيًا وتجديدها في عام ٢٠١٩ بفضل التبرع السخي من السيد يهودا نفتالي.

تدعم وزارة الزراعة والتنمية الريفية، من خلال مجلس الحدائق النباتية، أنشطة الحديقة النباتية.

The Botanical Garden was established in 1973 by Prof. Yaakov Galil. The garden covers 34 dunams, and is a semi-natural ecosystem, with a rich variety of plants.
