Clink Prison
The Clink Prison is the name given to all the prisons that have stood on a number of sites in this vicinity. The first prison in 1127 was a cellar in the Palace of the Bishop of Winchester, and the last was in Deadmans Place (Park Street). The prison held Protestant and Catholic religious martyrs at various times. It was closed in 1780, when it was burned by the anti-Catholic Gordon rioters.
This prison operated from the 12th century until 1780 and got its name from the area where the Liberty of the Clink operated, a local manor area, which belonged to the Bishop of Winchester, collected taxes from the residents of the area, and imprisoned those who were in arrears. Another version for the name of the prison, is the sound that the chains of the prisoners used to make. It was probably the oldest prison in England (for men and women).
