The "Lotus" King of the Lake

צמח הנלומבו (הלוטוס הקדוש) משנה את מראה האגם בכל עונה. קנה השורש שלו נטוע בקרקעית הבוצית של האגם ואוגר בתוכו חומרי מזון המאפשרים לצמח לשוב ולשגשג. אם יתייבש האגם, ייכנסו זרעי הלוטוס לתרדמה עמוקה, ויקיצו ממנה רק כאשר יתקיימו תנאים המתאימים לנביטתם, אפילו אחרי מאות שנים.

يُغير نبات النيلومبو (اللوتس المقدس) منظر البحيرة كل موسم جذموره منغرس في قاع البحيرة الموحل ويخزن بداخله العناصر الغذائية من أجل عودة ازدهار النبات. إذا جفت البحيرة، ستدخل بذور اللوتس في سبات عميق، ولن تستيقظ إلا عندما تكون الظروف مناسبة لإنباتها، حتى بعد مئات السنين.

The sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) transforms the appearance of the lake in each season. Its rhizome (underground stem) penetrates the muddy lakebed and accumulates nutritional materials that allow the plant to flourish anew each season. If the lake dries up, the lotus seeds go into deep hibernation; they awaken only when conditions are suitable for them to germinate, even after hundreds of years.

تأثير اللوتس
"تأثير اللوتس هو اسم لميزة فريدة للنبتة بفضلها تقوم بتنظيف نفسها. التأثير ناتج عن نتوءات مجهرية تغطي أوراق اللوتس. تتساقط قطرات الماء على الورقة وتدور بين النتوءات. يحافظ دوران الماء على الورقة جافة ونظيفة أثناء هطول الأمطار الموسمية الغزيرة الشائعة في موائل اللوتس الطبيعية.
حتى اليوم، يعمل المهندسون على تطوير أسطح تحاكي تأثير اللوتس لصد الماء والأوساخ في منتجات مختلفة.

The Lotus Effect
The "lotus effect" is the name for this plant’s unique self-cleaning characteristic. The effect is caused by microscopic bumps that coat the leaves. Drops of water that fall on the leaf slide and swirl among the bumps. The swirling water keeps the leaf dry and clean during the powerful monsoon rains typical of the lotus’ natural environment. To this day, engineers are working to develop surfaces that mimic the lotus effect to repel water and dirt on a variety of products
