Comments:
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed every year on October 17, after about 100,000 people gathered in 1987 at the "Human Rights and Freedoms" square at the Place du Trocadéro-et-du-11-Novembre in Paris, where a quote by the priest Joseph Wresinski (1917-1988) about the fight against poverty was engraved on the pavement (appears on the plaque).

A copy of the original plaque from Paris is displayed in other cities around the world, such as the one in Lisbon in 1994

Translation of the text on the sign:
ON OCTOBER 17, 1994, CITIZENS DEFENDING HUMAN RIGHTS GATHERED AT THIS SPOT. THEY PAID TRIBUTE TO THE VICTIMS OF HUNGER, IGNORANCE, AND VIOLENCE. THEY AFFIRMED THEIR CONVICTION THAT POVERTY IS NOT FATAL.

THEY PROCLAIMED THEIR SOLIDARITY WITH THOSE FIGHTING ACROSS THE WORLD TO ELIMINATE IT.

"WHEREVER MEN AND WOMEN ARE CONDEMNED TO LIVE IN EXTREME POVERTY, HUMAN RIGHTS ARE VIOLATED. TO COME TOGETHER TO ENSURE THAT THESE RIGHTS BE RESPECTED IS OUR SOLEMN DUTY."

FATHER JOSEPH WRESINSK
