William Smith (1769-1839), also known as "Strata" (layer), was an English geologist known for his study of geological strata (stratigraphy). He prepared the first geological map of Britain and is known as the "father of English geology".
(According to the Geological Society, the event indicated on the sign occurred on 11 June, not 11 December, the date given on the sign)
