The Vegetable Garden [Logo of Bustan Thom]
Our vegetable garden is an organic, sustainable garden built according to the principles of permaculture.
What is Permaculture?
Permanent – sustainable, lasting
Culture – culture
Agriculture – agriculture
The vegetable garden is meant to demonstrate our ability to grow vegetables in a healthy, economical, and toxin-free way. It reminds us where our vegetables come from, what they look like, and how they taste before they reach the supermarket...
What makes our vegetable garden sustainable?
Organic – The garden is organic and no chemical pesticides are used.
Growing medium – Mother Earth is the source of all life, so we make sure she is healthy and fertile: aerated, protected (beds bordered with stones), and enriched with organic matter (compost).
Soil mulching – Mulch serves as the earth’s protective layer: it shields against weather damage, prevents water evaporation, retains soil moisture, slows weed growth, and provides a habitat for beneficial organisms. We mulch the soil with dry leaves.
Seasonal – The garden grows seasonal vegetables (such as tomatoes in summer and carrots in winter), as well as perennial vegetables (such as New Zealand spinach, lettuce, and kale).
You are invited to stroll among the garden beds of our vegetable garden, discover what is growing this season, and be reminded that our food comes from nature!
