Afterword (from the Byzantine period to present)
During the Byzantine period the tell was abandoned, but east of it a cathedral was built that served pilgrims. Following the Muslim conquest in the seventh century CE, the site was abandoned, but ninth-century CE shipwrecks discovered in the southern lagoon attest to the existence of a nearby settlement. In the twelfth century a Crusader fort was erected on the edge of the tell; it was destroyed in 1291. Weapons of Napoleon Bonaparte’s army, which encamped at the site on its way to Akko, were found in the lagoons. A British lookout post was built on the mound, subsequently replaced by an IDF post, which was abandoned in the 1970s.
