The sign commemorates the writer, poet and statesman Felice Cavallotti (1842-1898).
Cavallotti fought with Giuseppe Garibaldi’s forces in the battles for the liberation and unification of Italy. Later elected to the Italian Parliament. He died in a duel with a newspaper editor after insulting him.

Soldier, legislator, poet in servile times,
he gave his sword to liberty in grievous days.
He nurtured eloquence for justice in peaceful hours.
He bound to art graceful fantasies.
Snatched from humble causes to greater promises,
among remembered affections he lives again.
