[Emblem of the Municipality of Giv‘atayim]

Yafa Yarkoni
1925–2012

In this square, at the heart of the neighborhood where the singer Yafa Yarkoni grew up, once stood “Café Tzlil,” which was run by her mother, Malka Gustin, of blessed memory.
Here, together with her brother and sister, Yarkoni sang and worked as a waitress, while the café served as a meeting place for members of the Haganah, the underground movements, artists, and intellectuals.

Yafa Yarkoni, one of Israel’s most prominent and important singers, was awarded the Israel Prize, the Israeli Artists’ Association Prize, and the title of Honorary Citizen of Tel Aviv.
