Shormera (Watchtower)
"One who sells a field (vineyard)...does not sell the winepress or the watchtower, even though they are in the vineyard." (Tosefta, Baba Batra 4:5).
The shomera - from the Hebrew word shmira, to guard - is an stone watchtower build to guard the farmer’s fields and vineyards during the relevant harvest seasons. Watchtowers in vineyards were usually two stories: the lower level had thick walls built of hewn stones and was used to store the farmer’s produce, while the upper level was a pergola from which the watchman kept guard.
"They made me guard the vineyards; [but] my own vineyard I did not guard."
(Song of Songs 1:6)
The upper level of the shomera was also used to sun-dry figs and grapes (raisins).
