From the late 19th century onward, this was Government Square, home of the Turkish Government House (the "New Saray"), a law court, City Hall, and a prison (the Kishle).
Construction of the clock tower began in 1900 with donations from wealthy Jewish and Arab townspeople, headed by the merchant Josef Bek Moyal.
Who installed the clock at the top of the tower?
