Wine Presses (beit gitot)
For millennia the grapevine and its products have played a central role in the life of mankind. Evidence of winemaking dating back 5000 years was discovered in simple treading basins and a collecting vat to gather liquid - a wine press (gat). Grapevine cultivation and winemaking in the Land of Israel reached its peak during the Byzantine period (4-7 centuries CE). The wine press complex in front of us is part of a large winemaking "factory" from the Byzantine period that was transferred to Neot Kedumim from the Nesher cement plant in Ramla and restored. The complex has ten treading floors located above storage pits for fermentation that are set around a large mosaic floor. After a few days in the pits the fermented juice was poured into jugs that were placed in niches underneath. "...and wine that cheers the hearts of men" (Psalms 104:15)
