משל יותם
משל שנשא יותם, בנו של גדעון השופט לאחר מותו, ובו ביקורת על מינוי אבימלך אחרי רצח כל אחיו "עַל אֶבֶן אֶחָת" (שופטים ט’ ה’). במשל סיפור על עצים שבקשו להם מלך; הם פנו לזית, לתאנה ולגפן שסירבו בשל רצונם להמשיך ולהעניק את תנובתם. בסופו של דבר נעתר האטד (שיזף מצוי) וקיבל את המינוי שתוצאותיו היו הרסניות: "תֵּצֵא אֵשׁ מִן הָאָטָד" (שופטים ט’ ט"ו).
תכונותיו הבוטניות של האטד מחדדות את המסר; שורשיו של השיזף מתפשטים לרוחב ומונעים מעצים אחרים להתפתח לידו, הוא קוצני, פירותיו ירודים וכשהוא מתייבש הוא דליק וּמְסַכֵּן את סביבתו.

The Parable of Jotham
A parable told by Jotham after the death of his father, Judge Gideon, criticizing his brother’s, Avimelech’s, rise to power after the latter brutally murdered all 70 of his other brothers "upon one stone" (Judges 9:5). The parable tells of the trees seeking to anoint a king. They ask the olive, fig, and grapevine who each refuse, wishing only to continue to bear their fruit. Eventually the Ziziphus spina-christi (atad), frequently - and misleadingly - mistranslated as a bramble, agrees to assume the role with devastating consequences: "let fire come forth from the atad" (Judges 9:15).
The jujube’s botanical traits highlight the message: its wide-spreading roots prevent other trees from growing in its shade. Its thin, wickedly thorny branches bear low quality fruit and it is highly flammable, endangering its surroundings when dry. Its Latin name, Ziziphus spina-christi, attests to it being considered a possible source for Jesus’ crown of thorns.

ויאמרו כל העצים אל האטד לך אתה מלך עלינו
ויאמר האטד אל העצים אם באמת אתם משחים אתי למלך עליכם באו חסו בצלי ואם אין תצא אש מן האטד ותאכל את ארזי הלבנון"

"The trees went out to anoint a king for themselves... Then they said to the atad tree, ’Be king over us.’ And the atad answered, ’If you really anoint me king over you, then come and take shelter in my shade, if you do not, fire will come out from the atad and consume the cedars of Lebanon’."
