Pier 1 was built in the early 20th century (1918) as part of the expansion of the Port of San Francisco to accommodate growing trade. After the decline in pier activity, the area was neglected until the 1990s, when it underwent restoration and was transformed into a prestigious office complex, while preserving elements of the original pier such as its framework and façade.
