1914 Albert Alexander: A Refugee Baby Born at the Palace
Throughout the First World War an estimated 250,000 Belgium refugees arrived in the UK. 38,000 men, women and children passed through Alexandra Palace. Albert Alexander was born onsite and named after the Palace.
The sign is one of a series installed to mark the 150th anniversary of the opening of Alexandra Palace (1873). The signs commemorate individuals who left their mark on the site.
During World War I, the site was initially a refuge for refugees from Belgium (before becoming a detention camp for citizens of enemy countries Click for sign's details, Click for sign's details). The sign marks the first baby born there.
