Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known by his pen name “Mark Twain” (1835-1910), was one of the best-known American authors, writer of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Prince and the Pauper, and dozens of other books.
Between 1891-1900 Mark Twain embarked on a lecture tour in Europe. In 1896-1897 he lived in this house in London, after the death of his daughter Susy from meningitis.

The plaque was installed in 1960.
