The sign is on the wall of the house where the writer Mary Ann Evans (Mary Ann Cross) lived, known by the pen name George Eliot (1819-1880), one of the greatest writers of that period.

Eliot lived in this house in the last year of her life (she only managed to live there for about 7 months).

The sign was placed in 1949.
