The Amphitheater

[Picture of a show in the amphitheater]

The amphitheater in Raanana was established in the 1950s on public land and was intended to be used for public gatherings and major events in the colony of those days, which numbered about 5,000 residents. Engineer Gottesman designed the amphitheater for 2,000 spectators. The spacious stone rows, the comfortable slope and the distance from the stage allowed for enjoyable viewing and lively participation. Many of the most important events in the history of the colony were held here, among them - the Independence Day celebrations, the 50th anniversary of Raanana (1972) in the presence of the then Prime Minister, Ms. Golda Meir, cultural performances, school conferences and more. In the 1960s the amphitheater was renovated, the stage was expanded, an operating room was added and the place was fenced off. As the colony’s population increased, wooden boards and blocks were added between the rows and in front of the stage, increasing the number of seats to about 5,000. Since the early 1980s, activity in the place has gradually ceased. The population of the city reached about 55,000 and the place was too small to accommodate the visitors. The area became increasingly populated and new houses were erected nearby, in such a way that the activity in the amphitheater created noise nuisances. Accordingly, the Raanana City Council approved the sale of the land for residential construction and at the same time an amphitheater was established in Raanana West Park, intended for about 8,000 spectators.
