עם תחילת תקופת המנדט, ועל רקע המצב הביטחוני המתוח ששרר בארץ, מנהיגות היישוב ראתה צורך להקים גוף עצמאי ובלתי תלוי בשלטון הבריטי אשר יעניק הגנה מרחבית למפעל ההתיישבותי.

ביוני 1920 התקבלה ההחלטה להקים את ארגון "ההגנה" בוועידת "אחדות העבודה", לאחר שחברי ארגון "השומר" תמכו והצטרפו ליוזמה. כחצי שנה לאחר מכן, ומשהוקמה ההסתדרות, עבר ארגון ההגנה לאחריותה של ההסתדרות.

Development of the protective force - Haganah
1920
With the beginning of the Mandate period, and due to the tense security situation prevailing in the country, the Yishuv leadership saw a need to establish an independent body independent of the British government that would provide spatial protection to the settlement enterprise.

In June 1920, the decision was made to establish the Haganah organization at the Ahdut HaAvodah conference, after members of the Hashomer organization supported and joined the initiative. About six months later, and since the establishment of the Histadrut, the Haganah organization passed to the responsibility of the Histadrut.
