רופא וביולוג יהודי רוסי, מגלה הפגוסינטזה (פאגוציטוזה) - בליעת חיידקים וגורמים זרים אחרים ע"י תאי הדם הלבנים. התאוריה נחשבה מהפכנית עם הופעתה אולם מאוחר יותר נתקבלה על הכל. חתן פרס נובל לפיזיולוגיה או לרפואה לשנת 1909 (צ"ל 1908).

A JEWISH RUSSIAN BIOLOGIST AND PHYSICIAN. DISCOVERED THE PHAGOCYTOSIS - ENGULFING OF THE BACTERIA AND OTHER FOREIGN ELEMENTS BY WHITE BLOOD CELLS. THIS THEORY WAS CONSIDERED AS REVOLUTIONARY AT FIRST BUT LATER IT WAS ACCEPTED BY ALL. MECHNIKOV RECIEVED THE 1908 NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSIOLOGY OR MEDICINE.
