Jewish Battalions, 1917-1918 The Jewish Battalions were the first regular Jewish military formation of modern times. They were established by Trumpeldor and Jabotinsky after the latter obtained British agreement to recruit three battalions of Jewish volunteers to take part in the freeing of Eretz Israel from Turkish control.
